The Pediatric Pulmonology Department at East Tennessee Children's Hospital specializes in the treatment of asthma in children and is here for our 180 patients living with cystic fibrosis.

Your Appointment with the Pulmonologist

At your first appointment, your child may need a chest X-ray. You will have to arrive 45 minutes early to complete this X-ray if your child hasn't had one already. The pulmonologists will then look at the X-ray to find possible problems.

Your child may also need a bronchoscopy. Doctors will use a long thin tube and fiberoptic camera to look at your child's lungs. He will take samples of mucous to test in the laboratory. A bronchoscopy can also be used to clean certain areas of the lung with sterile saline water. This procedure is done while your child is under anesthesia to avoid the slight pain and discomfort this test may cause.

To test the flow of air in the lungs and lung ability during different breathing patterns, doctors perform Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT). A PFT will show the doctor if your child has asthma or another pulmonary disease.
