Bladder Retraining and Voiding Education
Welcome to the BRAVE Clinic
At the BRAVE (Bladder Retraining and Voiding Education) Clinic, we provide excellent care in the treatment of bladder and bowel dysfunction. We evaluate and treat children who are experiencing bedwetting, daytime accidents, urinary tract infections, potty-training issues, urinary frequency/urgency, painful urination, constipation or private part pain.
Before you come to the BRAVE clinic, it’s important that you keep a record of your child’s bathroom habits.
- Keep a bathroom diary for a week
- Keep a calendar of accidents
- Know the frequency and quality of your child’s bowel movements
Evaluate your child’s immediate bathroom needs: Does your child have good access to the bathroom at school? Are they being asked to hold it? Are there any fears or concerns regarding using the restroom?
Evaluate your child’s behaviors at bathroom time: Are they holding urine/stool in an attempt to avoid missing out on the fun things in life? Do they rush or are they preoccupied in the bathroom? Do they argue with you about needing to go potty? Do you often hear the words "I don’t need to potty!"?
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Each patient’s needs are a little different, but you can expect any or all of the following:
- Genitourinary exam, a physical evaluation of your child’s genital area. This is necessary to rule out abnormalities, and does not have to be repeated at each visit.
- Urine specimen for children who are potty trained. This is used to evaluate signs of possible infection in the urine.
- Kidney or Bladder Ultrasound, a painless procedure that gives us a better look at internal structures of the urinary tract.
- Uroflow Study, where a machine with a bedside commode will assess normal voiding patterns. This study is not painful, but sometimes includes leads that have to be placed close to the private parts in order to pick up muscle activity in the pelvic floor. This can be an embarrassing situation for a child, but extra measures are taken to make sure they feel comfortable and have plenty of privacy.
Who We Are
The BRAVE Clinic was built to provide a service of excellence in the treatment of Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction (BBD). Dr. Irvine and Amber Wetherington, CPNP combine to offer over two decades worth of experience in the care of pediatric urology patients, and plan to use a team centered approach to meet patient needs.
Vision
Voiding dysfunction is a common issue in pediatric urology, but the associated symptoms are not commonly spoken about in public. These symptoms often leave patients vulnerable to social and psychological stressors. Treating voiding dysfunction not only relieves symptoms, but can have a positive impact on a patient’s social and emotional well-being.
