Flexor Tendon Rehab Protocol

Day 0 – 3:  REST

  • Strict elevation of the affected hand above the heart at all times.
  • No active or passive range of motion at this time.
  • Use of NSAIDs for pain (ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil)

Day 3 – 7: MOVE IT

  • Passive range of motion within the provided dorsal blocking splint.
  • Gentle finger wrapping with Coban and to help with edema.

Week 2 – 3: MOVE IT

  • Active range of motion to half a fist.
  • Begin differential gliding for Zone 2 injury.

 Week 4 – 6: MOVE IT

  • Full active range of motion and purposeful hand motion allowed while in splint.
  • May remove splint during exercises and focus on full extension.

Week 6 – 8: MOVE IT

  • Splint worn only between exercises.
  • All “active range of motion” motions allowed.

Week 8 and beyond:  USE IT

  • Return to full use and active strengthening.
