What is breast asymmetry

Like the rest of our body, breasts are asymmetric. Sometimes this difference falls outside the spectrum of normal and the breasts are dramatically different sizes. This condition is referred to as “breast asymmetry”. While this is not a threatening medical condition, breast asymmetry can cause a significant amount of stress surrounding body image.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Breasts can change size with the onset of puberty, weight gain or loss, and hormonal changes over the lifespan of a female. Breast shape and size can also be inherited. There are certain genetic conditions that can affect breast shape and development, such as Poland Syndrome. But often the exact cause of significant breast asymmetry is simply unknown.

What is the treatment for breast asymmetry?

There are surgical options to treat breast asymmetry. These include fat grafting, breast implant, breast reduction or mastopexy, or a combination. Your plastic surgeon will evaluate and come up with a plan to address to your teenager’s specific condition.
