What is breast asymmetry

Like the rest of our body, breasts are asymmetric. While for most people these differences are minor and go unnoticed, sometimes they can be significant  leading to breasts  of dramatically different sizes. This condition is referred to as “breast asymmetry” and a cane ranged from only minor size differences or shape difference is to complete absence of the breast and/or nipple on one side. While this is not a threatening medical condition, breast asymmetry can cause a significant amount of stress and embarrassment surrounding body image.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Most breast asymmetry in teenagers results from differences during the development of breasts and are present at birth. This can result from genetic conditions that can affect breast shape and development, such as Poland Syndrome, however in many cases no clear underlying causes is known. Asymmetry can also arise later due to trauma, masses within the breast, or other secondary factors. While many of these differences are present from a young age, some do not become evident in till breast development begins at puberty.

What is the treatment for breast asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry is a spectrum and can vary significantly from one person to another. As a result, there is no one single correct treatment for all patients. Each patient must be evaluated individually to determine the best way to treat their breast asymmetry. Surgical treatments include fat grafting, breast implant placement, breast reduction or mastopexy, flap reconstruction or a combination of these. Dr. Daggett will evaluate and provide a treatment plan tailored to your teenager’s specific condition.

Which of these treatments does East Tennessee Children's Hospital provide?
