Accessory Nipples

(Back to Our Services)

What are accessory nipples?

Accessory nipples (also called supernumerary nipples) can occur in both males and females.  These can occur anywhere on the trunk along the milk lines from the armpit down to the groin.  An accessory nipple may or may not have an associated areola and/or breast tissue.  It may simply looks like a mole.  While accessory nipples are not dangerous and do not cause health problems, they can often be a source of embarrassment and patients may choose to have them removed.

What causes accessory nipples?

The exact cause of accessory nipples remains unclear, but it is thought to be an error of embryonic development.  Accessory nipples can be hereditary but most often they appear randomly.

What is the treatment for accessory nipples?

Accessory nipples can be removed through surgical excision.  Smaller nipples can be removed as an in-office procedure.  Larger or more complex accessory nipples may require a more extensive excision in the OR.  Your plastic surgery provider will evaluate and discuss the best option to address your child’s specific condition.
