Hospital Consultation
Child and adolescent psychiatrists are available to provide consultation to medically hospitalized patients, as indicated and as requested by the hospital admitting service. The focus of hospital consultations is on the current medical situation and how it is affected by emotional, mental health, interpersonal and behavioral factors. Psychiatric medications are often a focus of consultation, in terms of indication for their use, possible side effects, and possible interactions with other medications or medical conditions. In the hospital setting, psychiatrists work in a consultation-liaison role with a multidisciplinary team which may include hospitalists, subspecialists, pediatric psychology, social work, child life, nursing, and others. Psychiatrists may coordinate with behavioral health providers outside the hospital or recommend behavioral health treatment following hospitalization.
Outpatient Clinic
Common reasons for outpatient evaluation and treatment include depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, DMDD, psychosis, PTSD, and other concerns regarding a child’s emotional well-being and mental health. Treatment plans may involve individual, group or family psychotherapy, medication, or consultation with other physicians, therapists, or professionals from schools and other community organizations. Child psychiatry outpatient evaluation may take many forms including brief consultation, short-term treatment, or longer-term treatment when indicated.
