Preparing For Your Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner at East Tennessee Children's HospitalWhat can I expect before the CT scan?

Sometimes CT scans require contrast. If your CT is a contrasted study, it will be administered through an IV.

Some CT scans also require oral contrast to be drank for a length of time. You will be given instructions on eating and drinking before your child's test.

If your child cannot hold still for the scan, we may need to schedule with sedation. Your ordering doctor should discuss this option with you.

What can I expect during the CT scan?

Most CT scans take 1-5 minutes. Depending on your scan, preparation times can take longer.

Your child will be placed on the CT table that will move in and out of the donut shaped scanner.

You may stay with your child during the scan unless you are pregnant or if sedation is required. If sedation is required a nurse will stay with your child the entire time.

What can I expect after the CT scan?

Your child can return to all normal activities after the CT scan.

If contrast is used for your child's scan, you will be asked to wait about 20 minutes to be sure there is no adverse reactions.

Your ordering doctor should contact you with the results of your scan. You may also look at the results yourself on the Patient Portal within 24-48 hours after your child's scan.
