Functional Renal Scan
A renal scan looks at the function of the kidneys. The patient can eat and drink prior to the scan. Fluids will be run through the IV during most of the scan, based on the patient’s weight. If requested by the doctor, a catheter will be placed to collect urine. Once the fluids are started and the catheter (if requested) is placed, the patient will be injected with a radiotracer that will flow into the kidneys. The scan will look at clearance from the kidneys to the bladder. This scan will take 30 minutes. If the doctor requests, Lasix will be administered during the 30-minute scan. The Lasix will be pushed over a 2–3-minute period. There needs to be very minimal movement for this scan.
This test takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.
**If unable to remain still, sedation can be used. Normally children between the ages of 6 months to 6 years will need sedation.
