SHINE Clinic
Strong, Happy, Informed, Nurtured, Engaged
SHINE clinic, a specialized visit for oncology survivors, provides a physical exam, lab testing, diagnostic imaging, and comprehensive screening for multiple disciplines. Completing treatment for cancer is an enormous accomplishment. Returning to “normal” presents challenges and opportunities. Our goal is excellence for the future that lies ahead for our survivors of all ages. Here at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, we recognize the challenges and provide support to our heroes through SHINE, our comprehensive survivorship clinic.
- Our lead oncologist, Leonid Melnikov, D.O., and our nurse practitioners specialize in short term and long term effects from cancer and treatment. Each survivor receives a thorough physical exam, and any additional labs or testing that may be indicated for long term follow up.
- Our Social Workers organize and lead our support meetings, provide resources, individual supportive counseling, and referral to Knoxville Cancer Support Community. Research shows that participating in support groups improves both quality of life and survival. Although individuals often receive support elsewhere, survivors usually find it is beneficial to interact with others who have had similar experiences.
- Our clinical research nurses, with the assistance of our patient educator, provide a customized Passport of Care. This equips patients and caregivers with written information summarizing treatment and its association with long term care.
- Occupational and Physical Therapy Screenings provide an assessment of activities of daily living and how the body moves. Our therapists will screen for deficits that may have occurred due to cancer and treatment, and assist with a referral for therapy if indicated.
- Our registered dietician provides a nutrition assessment, education and recommendations for age appropriate healthy choices.
- Our pediatric psychologist provides an assessment and discussion of mental well being. A referral for further assistance or resources will be provided if needed.
- A referral for TRACK testing, a neurocognitive assessment by psychologist, April Niesen.
