Patient Stories

Ivy

When Ivy was born with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect, Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Sumeet Sharma put her parents' minds at ease and asked them to trust him. "I’ll let you know when you need to worry," he told them. And even when surgery was necessary, Ivy's mother remembers Dr. Sharma never had to tell them it was time to worry...

He basically acted like we were stupid for getting a second opinion. Waited till the dad was out of the room to condescend, speak down to and scold me in front of my child. He was horrible. Never will be in his care again after.

The doctor was very well spoken and described everything well. My only complaint is I felt he was slightly rude to my child. He was nervous about being there in the first place, and doesn't speak very loud, the doctor seemed annoyed by this when asking him questions.

The doctor is a good doctor, but is very abrupt. We left not really understanding if our daughter really had POTS or not. The doctor said he preferred a different term, but we weren't clear on if she had it or not. He did seem pretty confident that nothing was wrong with her heart, but didn't really provide any other diagnosis. It could very well be that our daughter just complains about any little physical issue she has becauseshe does that. He is going to have her wear a monitor to try any measure an episodic issue she has, but does she have any kind of ongoing issue? I don't know. Everything that was mentioned he kind of brushed off as no big deal, but often when she would speak he would cut her off or when she paused to think he would be pressing for an answer. Overall, I think he is highly educated in terms of being a cardiologist, but is a poor communicator both listening and speaking (which is sometimes so fast you can't understand him).

The doctor entered the room and immediately notified us that there were no concerns about our son and that we were there just forward to precautionary visit.

Dr. Sharma was condescending and dismissive of our concerns. Multiple times told my wife to stop talking when she was talking about the kids (he didn't like when she would switch between the two which if that is the case and he cannot handle two patients at once then do not have them go together). He made reference to how even though the kids' exams looked fine today "they could have a heart attack tomorrow, next week, or get hit by a car" with the kids in the room. This was the most frustrating appointment we have ever had and it felt like we being treated like we were stupid for even brining our kids in to be seen.

Dr Sharma had terrible bedside manners. Did not exhibit patience, compassion, understanding and was extremely rude. My child has trouble hearing out of one ear and when he didn't hear what that "Dr" said, he began yelling what he said. He wanted to tell me how to parent my child, rather than stick to just being a Dr and telling us what my child would benefit from and leaving it to me as a parent on how I will enforce those things. He chose to tell me that I will do this or that, such as I will take my child's phone until he eats breakfast ( while taking my child phone out of hand and giving It to me) and I will not pick my child up from school if he passes out ( which is required by our schools if that happens or they have to call EMS). Is "Dr." Sharma going to pay the ambulance and hospital bill? Is he going to deal with DCS when they are also called on me for not picking my child up when a medical issue arises? This is by far the worst experience I've EVER had with any type of provider. Expectations of providers that work through children's are caring, patient, compassionate, friendly, comforting people and he was extremely far from any of those!

The doctor was very knowledgeable and well informed. He does speak very fast so there were times when we would ask him to repeat, but he was always willing and nice.

No bed side manor. Would not let talk and express my concerns. Basically didn't believe anything I said and asked my child if what I said she was experiencing was true. Awful experience

Very rude to my child. I adopted my child and this was the first time I had had her there. He kept saying that she is complaining about the same thing that she was there for a few years back and there was nothing wrong with her heart then. My child don't complain for no reason.

Dr Sharma was dismissive of our concerns and made us feel foolish for getting our son checked out. He would ask a question, but interrupt us before we were given a chance to answer. I feel like he is a knowledgeable physician but his bedside manner is unpleasant to say the least.
