I was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when I was 19. Even though I was on the older side for a children's hospital, ETCH welcomed me with open arms and began treatment with me immediately. I've lost count of the nights I've had to spend in the hospital but with great nurses and an overall great staff they were bearable. I've been cancer free since December of 2024 thanks to my oncologists at ETCH.

Our family spent 6 days and 5 nights at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital with baby Ricky, and those days will forever be a part of our story. 💙
Ricky was admitted after being diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) — a rare and serious condition where a hole in the diaphragm allows organs to move into the chest cavity. His hernia was on the right side, which makes it even more uncommon and complex. His right lung also collapsed due to this.
The days leading up to his surgery were filled with worry, fear, and endless prayers. But from the moment we arrived, the nurses, doctors, and staff at East Tennessee Children’s surrounded us with so much compassion, professionalism, and comfort. They explained every step, checked on us constantly, and cared for Ricky like he was one of their own.
We especially want to thank Dr. Vaughan, who truly saved our son’s life. His skill, calmness, and care during surgery were nothing short of a miracle. There are no words that could ever express how thankful we are for him — we will forever remember him as the doctor who gave our baby a second chance at life.

My granddaughter ended up with her 1st trip to the ER at ETCH that turned into a 9 day stay and surgery. The staff and Drs are top-notch! I can't say enough good things about the nurses therapist Drs and Staff at ETCH

My daughter was born at 35 weeks and ruptured a lung shortly after birth. Children’s successfully released the air in her chest and reinflated her lung without a chest tube. She was in the NICU for 9 days as she healed the lung and battled jaundice. She is now a beautiful 18 year old that just graduated, I will forever be greatful for Children’s Hospital.

My boy was born 2 weeks early, he was sent to The Children’s Hospital when he was 2 days old. Not knowing why to expect, my mom and I arrive in Knoxville from Bristol and the nurses took us under their wing. He came home on Halloween in 2004. He's turning 21!!! My boy is thriving in everything. Without the love and care from the hospital, we could have had a different outcome come.

19 years ago today (October 3rd) Daniel was born at 32 weeks. He weighed 3lbs 12oz. He was born at Ft Sanders and was quickly taken over to ETCH. Due to me receiving steroids for eight days prior to delivery, he was born with little complications. He required oxygen but no ventilator. He had a wonderful stay at ETCH where he was loved and cared for by the best doctors, nurses and staff. They made us parents feel welcome and confident that our little guy would be joining us at home soon. Today, October 3,2025, Daniel is a freshman at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Just a few blocks from where it all started. He was accepted into the Tickle College of Engineering and hopes to become a nuclear engineer someday.
I want to thank God for His mercy and grace and His guiding hand that leads these great doctors and nurses in the NICU at ETCH especially those that cared for our precious son during his stay in 2006. May God Bless you all.

July 9, 2019....The day started out like any other day. As the day went on though Silas (who was 10 at the time) was just not himself. He refused to eat and had NO energy. He complained of stomach pain. I kept telling him to rest. By early evening he was screaming with right side abdominal pain. We headed to Children’s ER. The staff at Children’s Hospital is nothing short of amazing! Silas was taken back immediately in the ER. He quickly had tests and appendicitis was ruled out. More tests were done....and still everything normal except that his white count was off. The Doctor said it just seemed something was going on, but he didn’t know what. I kept saying that this was not Silas at all. We were watching Silas decline before our eyes. He was screaming in pain and then he started to become so sick to his stomach. A stool sample was taken. I will never ever forget the Doctor’s words or his face. He came in, sat down on the bed and said something about that gut instinct being correct and knowing this wasn’t a stomach virus. He then informed me that Silas had ecoli, the very worrisome strand, O157:H7 and they were admitting him. At that time I had no clue and was actually relieved thinking, ‘ecoli, ok, I mean we’ll be at the hospital a couple of days for ivs and meds, and everything will be fine.’ I would come to understand the words the Doctor said to me in the coming days. The staff at Children’s was so great to Silas, and to me. I watched Silas fight a very long and hard fight for the next 22 days in the hospital. When he developed HUS on day 3 I was so scared. The Doctors, nurses and every single staff member we came in contact with were so kind to us. I experienced peace that can only come from Jesus and my family experienced the body of Christ in action in so many ways. Family and friends took my other kids, people provided meals for the kids and sent me so many gift cards, all of my kids school supplies were bought for the upcoming school year, people sent scriptures and prayed and prayed and prayed for Silas. When he went to PICU our church family covered him in prayer for 12 straight hours. The presence of God was so evident at his bedside. It was a long, long, long hospital journey with multiple blood transfusions, multiple dialysis treatments, almost 2 weeks in the PICU, crazy critical lab results, and more weeks on the 2nd floor. It was also a beautiful testimony of God’s healing power. Now, 6 years later and people who don’t know the story have no idea just what all Silas went through. He had no permanent kidney damage and is off of all medication for his kidneys. His last lab results were perfect! Dr. Subtrileu saw Silas every single day from the time he went to the PICU until discharge. He was always the calm voice who would assure me that Silas was on track of where they thought he be each day. We are so very thankful! Today Silas is healthy and is a Junior in highschool who enjoys playing football and soccer for his school.

My daughter was born at 31 weeks, almost born at 27 weeks. She weighed 3lbs, 4 oz and had no issues other than being small! She is 7 now and loves sports, reading , dinosaurs and is so smart!
-Brittany
Our Hudson Knox spent 103 days in the NICU after my water unexpectedly broke at 27 weeks. He was born at 30 weeks and weighed 3lbs 11oz. He was diagnosed with duodenal atresia after my water broke which required surgery. He had surgery before he even weighed 4 pounds & ETCH done a phenomenal job with his surgery. His scar looks amazing! When he was two weeks old, he was also diagnosed with Down syndrome which was a huge surprise. We got the news delivered with compassion and Kyle even brought us a DSDN welcome bag. This was easily the scariest time of our lives and I am thankful our son was at ETCH. He received top notch care and every single doctor, nurse, surgeon, lactation consultant, social worker, cuddler, etc was so amazing. We are so thankful for everyone there. He is now 2.5 and thriving.

Bristol Adair Raines. My son was born 6 weeks early at 34 weeks at 6lbs14oz. 20 inches long. He was born with fluid in his lungs. The fluid flooded him lungs and he came out not breathing for almost 10 minutes. I was 18 years old and his dad (Austin Raines) was 21 years old. He had to spend almost a month in the children’s hospital. He had to have oxygen, multiple sure tests because his sugar would stat up and he had to have multiple steroids to help him grow into the boy he is today. ❤️ He was diagnosed with autism in July of 25! But he’s the smartest little boy! He cherishes his beads of honor from the children’s hospital. To this day he carries it around!🫶🏼 without the nurses we had down there, their was a possibility my son wouldn’t have made it home. I’m so grateful for that hospital!
-Kyra
My twins were born premature @ 2pds & @ 28 weeks. They spent 2 months in the NICU due to a lot of problems. After graduating, they went back to the NICU & stayed 2 more weeks for RSV & came home on oxygen. The care they received made such a difference because they're thriving 19 year olds now 😊
-Kirsten
Kendall was born at only 24 weeks and spent 111 days in the NICU. At only 5 days old she had to have an emergency surgery to save her life. The wonderful staff took such great care of her! They walked us through every single process and made our stay as comfortable as possible. Kendall is now about to be 13 and is doing great! She enjoys playing golf, running track, and doing normal teenage activities.
-Ashley
My daughter was born at 32 weeks, & had to stay in the Children's NICU for a month and some days. She is now going on 5 (in November), & you'd never even think she was a preemie! She's such a strong hearted wild child! We absolutely loved the staff, & they made our NICU journey such a bliss. We will always be grateful for Children's Hospital, for saving our sweet girl. ❤️
-Jerika
I had my daughter Camila at 28 weeks due to Eclampsia, where I had to stay in the ICU and she was taken to the NICU at ETCH. She was born weighing 2lbs 4oz, she spent 3 months in the NICU and came home the day before her original due date! One of her NICU nurses called her The Little Engine That Could! She's now 3 years old and is so smart, funny, feisty, sassy, and loving! She loves reading, playing outside, loves anything with wheels such as cars trucks tractors and more, and going to the zoo and aquarium! ETCH was a blessing to us and my daughter, I couldn't thank you all enough for all you done for her and us!
-Katelyn
My baby girl Arya was born at 28 weeks…. Her due date was December 5th,2024 and she was born September 12th, 2024…. She spent a total of 54 days in East Tennessee Children’s Hospital NICU….She has been a fighter since day one…. She went from being this tiny helpless baby to a baby with a lot of spunk…. I can never thank ETCH enough for all they did for my baby girl and for me and my husband!!!! We will forever be grateful!!!!

My son , Dax, was hospitalized for about 10 days just after he turned 6 after going to the ER and learning that he had pancreatitis. We have since learned, thanks to Dr. Devoid, that he has two genetic mutations that contribute to his pancreatitis, one being the PRSS1, making this hereditary pancreatitis. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to watch, the severe pain this brings. But, the staff was absolutely INCREDIBLE and my son was actually sad to leave and wanted to come back, solely because of the staff that would take him to the play room and make slime and bracelets. We left with so much slime and bracelets. The volunteers would even come to his room to do these things with him and I can’t tell you how much it helped my mama heart to see him finding some joy in this entire diagnosis. The sweet nurses also were a huge help because he’s a hard stick and had to have new ivs placed multiples times, they communicated with him, and me, and learned that it helped him to watch, and learn, and even let him help with the removal of his final iv before we went home. He wasn’t treated as if this wasn’t his body and left in the dark, even at a young age. Dax now tells everyone about this diagnosis and what he has learned about it, while also telling all of his friends about his experience at Children’s. He doesn’t even talk about the pain it brings, but all the fun he had while he was inpatient and what he learned. We know we will probably be back at some point because of the hereditary pancreatitis and as much as I dread knowing what that entails, I know my boy will at least have the bright spot of the staff to help make it not so bad when he is there.

McKenzie was admitted to Children’s Hospital last October. She has a terminal mitochondrial disease called POLG. McKenzie was a pretty normal teen until her disease started attacking her body. Once she was walking, talking, eating, enjoying special ability cheer, and going to school. Now she is trach, vent, and gtube dependent. We spent most of our time in the PICU. The doctors and nurses in the PICU were amazing. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
-McKenzie
Quinnlee was diagnosed at 10 months old with a Wilms tumor. At the time, she had fallen off the growth curve and was developmentally behind. After a 7 hour surgery to remove her kidney and the tumor, she was cancer free, thanks to the amazing team at ETCH. Over the last year, she's had 3 surgeries and spent more than 15 nights in the hospital, gaining her a reputation to accompany her sassy attitude on the 2nd floor. ETCH has become a second family, and has gotten her back on the growth curve and surpassing milestones! Quinnlee is alive today because of ETCH, and it has become our goal to give back in every way possible.

My son Carter was born at 30 weeks and stayed In the nicu for 2 months. I was 15 years old when I had him. It was one of the hardest times in mine and my husband’s life. We are so thankful for the Nicu staff that took care of our boy. We even became close to them. He is now 5 and starting Kindergarten this year. Healthy as can be, he is our little warrior.

My daughter broke her leg 2 yrs ago & required an ER visit. Everyone we met throughout the visit was so kind & compassionate. The child life specialist was so sweet and caring. Made a very scary moment in our life feel somewhat "ok". She now says that's the job she wants when she grow up!!

Ever since i was a baby i had extreme stomach issues, i was in and out of specialists and was always at Children’s. Although i never did overnight stays it was still difficult for me, i had went through so many tests at such a young age including having my first colonoscopy at age 3. After everything i finally got all of my stomach issues under control and i didn’t go back to specialists for a little bit. But i ended up having to go back and i was diagnosed with PCOS, because of this i had horrible weight gain at 14. So they got me on weight loss shots but they messed my stomach up pretty bad, so back to G.I. i went. They did scopes and tests on me and ended up finding out i had esophagitus. Well a year later i was in extreme pain and ended up having to have my gallbladder removed, i was homebound from school for 2 months from before surgery until i was done with recovery. But i made an amazing recovery and i am so thankful! Which brings us to now, i am so thankful for Children’s Hospital! All of the specialists that made an extreme impact on my life and especially the nurses! Because of the nurses at Children’s i am so excited to start my journey as a pediatric nurse once i’m out of school! It’s all i’ve ever wanted to be, thanks to these wonderful people!! Thank you so much Children’s Hospital, for everything!!

Our daughter Braylynn was born in 2014, she weighed 1 pound and 9 ounces. She was 12 inches long, and was born at 24 weeks! She's now 11 and enjoys riding horses, playing with her little sister and spending time with her family. Thank you ETCH for all you did for our baby and keeping her safe there for 5 months, and thank you to Ronald Mcdonald house for letting us stay the whole time so we could be close 😊 ❤️

5 Days old I got nec, leading to 3 months in the Nicu.. removal of large intestine and appendix, 5 years ago I had an emergency surgery to remove 40% of my short bowel, causing me to have short bowel syndrome and they said I wouldn't make it past 5 years. For the last year I haven't been doing the best, but with Children's hospital they have saved me.. I recently got diagnosed with Gastroparesis on top of everything and now have a NJ tube, I graduate Highschool in december and start Nursing school in January. My entire life has been spent at Children's hospital, and now it's my turn to pay it back and help as many kids as possible. Thank you Children's 💗.

Our daughter Gabby was having jerking movements at 5 months old. Our peditrician didnt know what they were, but scheduled an EEG out (2 weeks). In doing research ourselves we thought it could be seizures. We went to ETCH that night and the next morning after an EEG and MRI it was confimed she had a rare form of epilepsy called Infantile Spasms. Dr. Gammeltoft gave us the news and started an aggressive treatment plan with steroid shots we had to administer 2xs a day for 30 days. The prognosis for this condition is poor, but everyone at ETCH gave us hope that we had caught it early. We were admitted and stayed for a week then went home to finish the treatment. Her spasms stopped on day 5. She will be 13 this year and has not had a seizure since, and she is happy and healthy. We are eternally grateful for the care we received during the most terrifying time of our lives.

My daughter milah had meconium illeous when she was born. At 2 days she was sent to childrens hospital through lifeline. As a terrified new mom, etch was so comforting and explained everything the whole time. While she was in nicu i was taken care of with meals and ill never forget that time. She ended up having cystic fibrosis and we go to the cystic fibrosis clinic every few months now. They habe been great in this journey. They have been in our lives for almost 8 years now and they feel like family. Milah will turn 8 next month and she loves singing and dancing ❤️

Our oldest son was born at 32 weeks and whisked through the tunnels from Ft Sanders to ETCH. The NICU staff and staff at Ronald McDonald house were amazing! He's now 19, 6ft 4 and very healthy thanks to all of the doctors and advice they gave to us. ETCH is amazing!
-Jody
My sophomore year of highschool, I was sitting in my chemistry class when I fell off my stool and started to seize and go into cardiac arrest. The paramedics rushed me to ETCH as I was no longer breathing. I was defibrillated and kept in the PICU for 6 days. There, I was treated with the best care possible. The nurses and doctors were all so so kind. Even tho we never received an answer as to what happened with me and my heart, I felt appreciated and cared for. I keep going back to children’s for follow ups and the doctors still treat me with kindness and compassion. I will forever be grateful for ETCH.

When I was in middle school, I was always super happy and loved playing sports. That all changed when I kept breaking bones, and my doctor sent me to Children's. Being given such a disappointing diagnosis changed my life, but now I am stable thanks to East Tennessee Children's Hospital. Middle school was a time of joy, filled with the thrill of sports and endless energy. However, my active life took an unexpected turn when I started experiencing frequent bone fractures. This led to numerous visits to doctors and eventually a referral to Children's Hospital, where I received a life-altering diagnosis. Children’s has changed mine and my family’s lives with the great team they have thats worked with us for years now.

20 years ago I had my first son Tylor which was born with Gastroschisis, and he is now 20 years old. He had surgery right away after being born and only had to spend 1 month in the hospital Nicu. We had a very special nurse while there named Melissa which still works there, and now I am an employee with the EVS department and couldn’t be happier to work for just a great company.

Hello! My name is Emberly Johnson! On 11/22/21 I was in a life threatening car accident. I had an emergency 7 hour that saved my life. I spent months in and out of ETCH. My life went from being an athlete, to spending most of my time in the hospital. I thought my life was taken away from me in a blink of an eye. I received wonderful care at ETCH, the staff made my stay more comfortable and helped me along my journey, which inspired me to want to do the same for others. This summer I’ve been selected to be apart of the ETCH volunTEEN program! After high school, I plan to pursue my career in nursing!
-Emberly
Our 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with severe scoliosis (57 degree, S curve) that required surgery. Her surgeon and ETCH did a wonderful job throughout her journey. Before surgery she was a cross country and track runner. She was afraid how this surgery would affect her ability to run. Within 2 week of the surgery, she was back to doing her normal daily activities. She is now able to hike, swim, and bike one month post op. She feels that she will be back to running this upcoming cross country season. So thankful for the team at ETCH for their approach to spinal fusion surgery! They have the process figured out for a fast recovery.
-Tesha
Olivia was born at 28 weeks and 4 days! She spent 95 days in ETCH NICU. There were many nights, after my shift at work, that I would return to a room full of nurses taking turns feeding her and holding her while they would play music for her! We had the BEST team of doctors and nurses for Olivia. Especially nurse Amanda and Vicki, her primaries! We will forever be grateful for the love and compassion that was shown to our daughter in this trying time.
Olivia just turned 3 years old on 3/10/25. She has had many obstacles along the way, including CP, seizures, Aicardi syndrome, heart and lung conditions, and many more. But she doesn't let anything stand in her way! She is resilient! She is such a light and always so happy!
Through ETCH rehab therapies, Olivia is working hard on weight barring through her arms and legs, sitting up on her own and feeding herself!
Needless to say, the progress that Olivia has made, over the past 3 years, would not have been possible without the doctors, nurses and therapists through East Tennessee Children's Hospital!
-Erica
Bryleigh was born at Fort Sanders hospital at 32 weeks and 3 days, she was 3lbs and 7oz. Bryleigh was immediately transferred to Childrens Hospital NICU after birth. Her NICU stay was thankfully a little under a month but I visited her every day. Her nurses told me everyday that she was a very fiesty girl. She is now 5 years old and around 40 pounds and so smart!! She start kindergarten in August!
-Bryleigh
Our son Lincoln spent 40 days at children’s. He was born at 33 weeks weighing 5 pounds 3 ounces. We had our shares of ups and downs with his progress while there but everyone there that worked with him also treated my husband and I with the utmost care and respect. But more importantly I knew they truly cared about my son. He just turned a year old and is the picture of health , strength and intelligence. He’s been walking since he was 11 months old and you would never know that he was born a prematurely.
-Sierra
Winnie was born at 27 weeks weighing 1 pound 5 ounces. We knew our NICU journey would be a hard fought battle. The doctors and nurses became our second family. After 104 days, she was able to come home and is now a thriving 1 year old. We could never thank ETCH for all their kindness and support.
-Sarah
Our daughter was a preemie of 26wks. Her lowest weight was 1 lb 15 oz. Dr Prinz was a godsend! She's now soon to be 35. We will be forever grateful to the NICU Dept of ETCH!
-Brenda
Aurora Jade was born at 30 weeks and 1 day at fort sanders regional medical center in Knoxville TN! She was measuring as a 26 week baby when she was born at 2 pounds 6 ounces! She was immediately transferred to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville TN! We stayed in the Ronald McDonald house while she was in the NICU. We went back and forth every day to visit her. It was so hard seeing her with all of the tubes and wires but she fought hard and made it through it! Her biggest achievements were getting off of oxygen and learning to eat on her own which she achieved very fast! She loved pulling her feeding tube out in the NICU with a total of 13 times in 6 weeks! She is such a happy and feisty baby! Our favorite memory was walking in one day and being told we were going home! Just stay strong by and everything you do will all be worth it! She is now 8 months old and 14 pounds!! East Tennessee Children’s Hospital took great care of us and we can never thank them enough for saving our baby girl🩷
-Alyssa Hubbard
I had a 27 week old preemie In March 1992.
I had a horribly I'll pregnancy because of how I'll I was & I t ad a great Fort Sanders. OB/GYN ( Dr.. Shine ) & she diagnosed my little baby girl's issues & not only took her precious time she had off with her 2 little girls to explain & helped me understand &arranged a meeting with the all the ETCH NICU Dr's & personnel that would be involved in my daughter's care the ETCH NICU was wonderful & took great care of us that was not the only time ETCH had been a great refuge for me they help me whe n my first child accidently ingested poison then my son was born on labor day in 1994 they sent a team to check him out at Fort Sanders because of his sister's birth defects. After all that in the 90's they had a program where I took 2 of my children that was given a blood test yearly to try to pre diagnose if they were maybe headed for type 1 diabetes...not a lot of programs did this that early & I believe that this was the infancy stage of the now test screen 1 plan that does detect early type 1 diabetes. So ETCH has to me has been a pioneer to help prevent, get ahead of, & help our children of east TN. Please get your children screened if there is a family history & support ETCH because they do & will support your children & family!
-Karen
Our experience with Children’s has always been amazing. The care is incredible. I have always referred Children’s Hospital to a tower of angels. Our recent stay proved this once again. We arrived in the snow storm on Friday. Men were scraping snow. We couldn’t find a wheelchair for my niece. A worker by the name of Mr. Glass came to my rescue. He searched 4 different places and returned with a wheelchair for my niece. I am so grateful. It isn’t just the doctors and nurses that are Angels, it is everyone associated with this hospital. Thank You Mr. Glass. You are a true Hero in my heart.
-Lisa Miller
My granddaughter was brought in by ambulance for a DVT. I want to thank the E.R. doctors and staff for the great care she received. I had a couple of questions after she was discharged and the emergency followup nurse got back with me quickly. What a pleasure to have such a treasure in Knoxville.
-Larry
I just wanted to give a shout out to my daughter's, Charlotte Ritz, night nurse Emma. She has been with us for three nights, always so sincere and caring!

We spent multiple days in the PICU in 2019 from the result of a TBI. I cannot express the gratitude and thanks I have for everyone there who made us comfortable, and kept our baby alive. Today Ariel is doing well because of The staff, and Drs. Of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Thank you all !
-Christina
Dr. Karsten Gammeltoft and his team was so professional and loving with my grandson from day one and current and to his needs. My grandson has PTSD and severe anxiety due to the abuse of his biological father and his seizures are believe to be due to the stress of the PTSD and severe anxiety. We can not express how grateful we are to Dr. Gammeltoft and his team, by far the best and always show there care and concern for not only my grandson, also me and asking many questions to make sure he is treated properly.
-Anita

I can't say enough good things about the staff at children's hospital! Doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists, they all do a GREAT job. My baby was born at 32 weeks and is currently on day 53 in the NICU, but thanks to the amazing care he has received he is now thriving and reaching his milestones. The nurses and doctors go above and beyond to make sure my child and I feel supported and cared for along the way. I will always be grateful for their kindness and expertise. I don’t think it’s possible to show how thankful I am for what they’ve done for my child. This place truly is a blessing.

My daughter was born with spina bifida in 2008. She spent 28 days in the NICU and has surgeries at two days old and two weeks old. She had another surgery at ETCH when she was 5. She had excellent care and is going great today!
-Chelsea
In summer of 2021 my then 2 year old son, Knoxford, drowned while at a July 4 celebration. He was airlifted to ETCH and we were moved to the PICU. The PICU nurses took as much care of me as they did him in the time we were there. From PICU we moved to 2. Miss Rose with housekeeping became one of his favorite people to see. We’re so thankful for everyone at ETCH.
-Tierney
My daughter was diagnosed at childrens hospital with a brain tumor. We went to several appointments for three months and finally got a appointment at ETCH and thats when we started getting answers. We are very thankful for our team of doctors. Thirteen years later we still go to ETCH and the staff that has been on this journey with us has become like family.
-Tomeka
Not only one, but two of my babies were hospitalized for multiple days at separate times in respiratory distress from RSV. My daughter being only 15 days old. From staff in the ER, to therapists and volunteers, I will never say good enough things about every person we've encountered at ETCH.
-Madison

Our son was transferred to ETCH at 30 weeks preterm. We were terrified of what could happen but the nurses, doctors, therapist, volunteers, and all other staff made us feel as comfortable as possible. Thanks to their care our boy is now nearly 6 months old and thriving. I’m so thankful for the care they provided during this incredibly difficult time in our lives.
-Darianna
My son was diagnosed with late onset GBS and Meningitis around the brain and spinal cord. He sadly passed away after being in the nicu for a month. The team of nurses he had were absolutely AMAZING! I will always trust ETCH with any of my future kids!

Our journey with ETCH began from birth being transferred to the NICU, and we stayed for 44 days with our son. He was diagnosed with laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, and bronchomalacia. We are grateful for the team who advocated for our son’s surgery. We are thankful for the wonderful services provided.
-Jaymie
My daughter was born premie at 31 weeks 6 days, she spent a total of 54 days in the NICU at childrens. Every one of the staff members are truly angels, taking care of not only the patients, but the family members also. They are the most kind and caring people ever. They saved my daughter's life, and our family is FOREVER grateful to them.
-Tiffanie
Both my babies were NICU babies, Ansleigh and Kacen. They were born nearly 6 years apart. I had preeclampsia both times, but with my youngest, Ansleigh, it was a lot worse. There was also AEDV with her. He was born at 30.2 weeks, her at 29.4. He weighed 3.3 lbs and she weighed 1.14 lbs. He stayed 47 days, her 76 days. We almost lost Ansleigh once. She is home and well now!
-Kelly
Our coworker had a very traumatic event with his daughter and we wanted to show how much we were thinking of them. It was very accommodating to be able to call into the gift shop to purchase some things to send to his little girl to show that we cared and was thinking of them. Kristin was very kind and helpful in assisting me to pick out the perfect gift. Thank you!
-Stacey Jenkins
I was born with Hydrocephalus. I have had 54 brain surgeries all at childrens. The time I spent at Childrens inspired me to obtain my CNA license. I now work at Childrens! I love being able to relate to the patients in a unique way!
-Alexa
being diagnosed with sickle cell was devastating. i never thought i would make it to college but now i am a sophomore at roane state and thriving thanks to etch for their endless support.

After some concerning red flags, we brought our son in, only to find that we would be having brain surgery the next day. The neurosurgeon and infectious disease specialist were informative through the process and eased our worries with realistic expectations and hope. In such a scary time, we felt peace and encouragement from all the staff, especially on the PICU floor.
-Andrea
My son has been coming to the hematology oncology clinic since he was 6 weeks old and receiving platelet & blood transfusions. He is now a big 3 year old! Although he has no diagnosis other than Noonan Syndrome causing his blood issue the team at ETCH has been wonderful to him! We love them and look forward to our days spend here at ETCH.
-Sara
I was a 33 weeker and spent some time in the nicu. Now 24 years later I'm proud to say I am a nurse in the very same nicu!
-Sydney
On August 24th, 2022 my daughter Kamerie was born at 28 weeks. She weighed 1lb 5 ounces. She is not the typical 28 weeker at all. She was dx with a very rare chromosome deletion referred to as 18p deletion syndrome. She may be in fact celebrating her 1st birthday in the NICU. She has amazing primary nurses and a wonderful care team that want to see her win so badly.
-Anitra
Reed was born on 12-8-15 at 29 weeks and 1 day. He spent 94 days in the NICU, had lots of ups and downs. He had a small brain bleed, was on oxygen, tube feedings. We were so appreciative of the entire staff and specialty doctors at ETCH.
-Amanda
My daughter was diagnosed with POTS over 15 years ago. She has seen almost every specialist at children’s hospital. She was always treated like family in every Department.
She started volunteering her sophomore year of high school.
Fifteen years later She is now a NICU nurse and will always consider Children's Hospital as part of her family.
-Stacey
13 years ago my 10 week premature three pounder spent 5 weeks and a day at Etch. Before the south tower every one was all together. Because we lived far away we could only visit every other day. But I always trusted the nurses to give him their best care. They taught him to suckle ; they taught us to feed him. They treated us with respect. Thank you.
-Leslie
My 6 year old has spent all of her life in and out of ETCH, and she sees nearly all of the specialists. We refer to the whole hospital as our “home away from home” because everyone makes sure she’s completely taken care every time they see her. We adore the providers and staff!
-Brandy
When I was 18 weeks pregnant, we found out our son had hydrocephalus. Dr. Savage met with us shortly after to start making a plan for his birth and beyond. Having support during pregnancy allowed us to be confident parents as soon as he was born. Our son is the happiest little boy, and we are grateful for the support we have received from ETCH!
-Sarah
My twins were born spent 6 and 8 weeks in the NICU. Beth and Lisa were amazing nurses! The girls had developmental delays and we had 16 specialist over 4 years. With the help of the ETCH doctors, my daughters have absolutely NO health issues and are healthy 16 year olds. This past summer, one of my twins even volunteered as at Volunteen at ETCH and loved it.
-Nicole
Our 9yo had a very aggressive leukemia during the pandemic, and she was here for many months. All of the Hem/Onc doctors, nurses, staff, Child Life, etc were incredible in every regard. She passed away, and though we are forever heartbroken, it could not have been a more loving and respectful experience. We will always hold ETCH Hem/Onc in a special place in our hearts.
-Sarah

My son was transferred by helicopter from an outlying hospital. Right after the doctor talked to us and left the room he coded. He came out of ICU the day after Christmas. Not only did my son receive excellent care at ETCH but it was the best hospital I ever worked at. Amazing staff/administration.
-Donna
I have been a patient with the gastroenterologists at ETCH for years. The warm hearts I seen every time I came made this place absolutely wonderful even in the darkest moments! I knew one day I wanted to work here as it felt like home! You walk through these doors and feel like you’re family. Now, I work in the ER here and have truly found the place I call home!
-Kellie
We took our child here back in March when the systems were down, she was there for a full 2 weeks! She had to have emergency surgery and have an infectious disease specialist come in as everyone was stumped on her illness. While there, all the nurses were so sweet to my baby. She was in so much pain but the experience was made easier with all the kindness, games and toys.
-Chey
We had the pleasure of being treated by Joseph N. Peeden Jr., M.D. He is a true “Patch Adams”. I can’t even describe the kind of care he gave her. He got on the phone with her neurologist and an optometrist that seen her right then. The nursing staff just love him too. I’m so thankful that Doctors like Dr Peeden still exist.
-Cynthia Johnson
I was a surgical patient several times in the 1950's. The nurses and other staff were always so friendly, kind, and cheerful. I especially remember being in the hospital on my birthday one year, and the kitchen staff made a cake for me. ETCH was a major part of my childhood, and I have good memories despite my reason for being there.
-Nikki
My son was born may 26th at fort sanders 2022. When he was born he came out with breathing problems. Later that day it got no better so they transferred him to childrens. My heart was broken. He spent 5 days there. The staff was amazing. He had wonderful nurses. Any questions I had they answered. They have a special place in my heart. I love the new nicu department & staff

My 3lb. baby spent his first 7 weeks in the NICU. Some of his Amazing nurses even made him clothes. At that time, 38 years ago, one nurse assistant was known for teaching babies to eat. They laughingly said she could get a rock to eat. It worked. She taught him, and to this day, the boy LOVES food! I will forever be in their debt for the care of my miracle baby!
-Toni
My son was born at 29 weeks, only weighing 1 pound and 15 ounces. He spent 10 weeks at ETCH. The nurses and doctors in the NICU were amazing at helping our boy heal and come home. We are so very thankful to ETCH and the ability they have to give life saving help to micro preemies such as they did for our son.
-Stacy
ETCH saved my daughters life! She became an oncology patient in 2012 and is currently a survivor patient. The entire staff treated and still treats her like their own and made us feel like family through our extensive stays!
-Nickie
Our sweet Ava was seen by Dr. Peeden in the rare diagnostic clinic in the Summer of 2017. She was three and we had searched and searched for answers. He put us on the road to wellness for her and we can never thank him enough. Dr Peeden, Dr. Childs and Dr. Crain treated Ava in the PICU and saved her life. Amazing medical staff and true Heroes🤍
-Nikki

My son was born 12 weeks early due to health issues I was having. We are going on month 2 of our NICU stay. I can’t thank NICU nurses and doctors enough for doing a fantastic job with boy. Him being my first child and being in the NICU has been a learning curve for us all and we couldn’t have picked a better hospital!
-Emily
Our son came to ETCH at 1 wk old bc of a metabolic disease & his life was saved in the PICU. 10 years later, he has been hospitalized here 3 times in 3 months battling bowel disease. Our boy has changed, the faces of staff have changed, but the quality of care & extreme support we’ve received remain the same. Thank you for being his lifeline & saving grace for a decade.
-Beth Ann
As a 9 year old during a check-up, the doctor found a Lymphangioma mass in my throat that was 90% cancerous. A “birthmark” was found in my brain and doubled in size when I was 17. On Jan 7, 2009 I had brain surgery to remove this tumor followed by daily physical/occupation therapy for 9 mos. I’m now a 30 year old with a family and 2 amazing children!

My daughter was born with a rare severe gastrointestinal birth defect, unbeknownst to us prior to her birth. She had many surgeries and DR appts for years. When the doctors told us we would not recognize her 5-6 years later, we were in disbelief. She struggled with short bowel & other complications from surgeries. She is now a picture of health. We are so grateful! 💕
-Amy
Our son was only 27 months old when he was diagnosed with Wilms' Tumor. After many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, and thanks to the staff at ETCH, particularly Dr. Pais, he is now 31 years old and a practicing pharmacist, who just welcomed his first child, a son, into the world.

-Julie Ruiz
I was born 4 weeks premature in 1986 at Ft. Sanders Medical Center and rushed to ETCH where it was discovered I had a cleft palate. I had surgery at 18 Months old. It was thought I would need speech therapy and possibly tubes in my ears. Thankfully, after some time it was determined none of that was needed. Thankful for the staff of ETCH for taking care of kids!
-Whitney
I was an RN at Children's for 13 years. Years of great love for the children who taught me so much.
-Darilyn
If I could sum up the NICU in two words it would be miracle workers! In March 22’ our newborn was diagnosed with ecoli meningitis but after 45 days we brought home a healthy baby boy! He is now 6 months, his last MRI didn’t show any significant issues and so far he doesn’t have any sign of developmental delays or any major health concerns. We LOVE ETCH.
-Katie
I was once a patient and being treated for a Wilm's tumor. 23 years later, I was going back to school to be a nurse practitioner and my pediatric preceptor was one of my chemo nurses!
-Niki
My son was hospitalized as a newborn. He couldn't tolerate any formula. Our pediatrician sent us to Children's. The staff took him immediately. We almost lost him that night. He spent several days in ICU and on the floor. Children's doctors made a diagnosis and put him on a formula he could tolerate. Now he is a state trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
-Becky
Our daughter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2016. We spent much of the next three years at ETCH. The staff became like family to us. -Becky
My kidney was saved by the best doctor, Preston Smith when I was 4. Despite all the obstacles, he never gave up! I will always remember and be grateful to him.

I have been a patient of ETCH since the day I was born. I was born 2 months prematurely with a cleft lip and palate. I stayed in the NICU and then became a patient in the cleft clinic. ETCH has always gone above and beyond for myself and my family: answering questions we had, comforting me about an upcoming surgery, and making me feel heard. Thank you for all you do ETCH!
-Nicole
My adopted daughter was brought to ETCH when she was 3 days old because she had begun going through drug withdrawals. She spent 1 month and 1 day there as they weaned her off of the drugs. The nurses were so compassionate to us. I will always be grateful for all of the time spent with us, the countless phone calls, and their encouraging words.
-Stephanie
I was diagnosed by the best surgeon who worked with ETCH with a benign tumor in my hip when I was 10 after 9 long months of pain, and had 2 surgeries there. I still have the handmade name tag from my door and stuffed dog I was given. ETCH and my surgeon changed my life in 2005 and made the process a good experience for a scared little girl and her family.
-Amanda

I was born at 26 weeks gestation and spent 5 months in the NICU. After SEVERAL complications, at one point I was given less than 2% chance of survival, but here I am, I will be 11 years old next week. My family is incredibly GRATEFUL to the hardworking team in the NICU that helped me fight that grim prognosis so that they could see me not only SURVIVE but THRIVE!!
-Ella
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child here. I am now almost 25 years old. The staff at ETCH made me feel safe, and cared for. And made it so much fun!! There was a whole closet of fun games and toys in the diabetes clinic. And a dog that came to visit. I will never forget it.
-Jesi
I was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma at the age of 16 months; thankfully, Dr. Pais had recently started at ETCH! Dr. Pais promised my mom that he would dance at my wedding and 24 years later he fulfilled that promise! I also had the pleasure of having Dr. Malik as my pediatrician before he joined the hem/onc staff at ETCH! Thanks ETCH and staff for your care!

I was a six-year old little girl suffering for weeks with severe pain in my leg; scared to death of doctors. Not only was my Perthes quickly diagnosed, much to my parents’ relief, but I had the time of my life at Children’s. Art, books, a clown named Bobo, and the kindest doctors and nurses are still alive in my memories. It was 1968.

My child was born extremely premature and was only 2 lbs 4 oz. She spent 42 days in the NICU at Children's where they gave her the best care. From the nurses, to the doctors and the cuddlers...it was top notch during what felt like one of the longest roller coasters of our lives. My kiddo will be 11 soon and we feel so much gratitude for those who cared for her during those 6 weeks. Without them, she may not have made it through those uncertain early days. We are forever grateful.
-Christine

I want to thank each of you at East Tennessee Children's hospital for saving my daughters life. When she was just a month old she was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis. She was sent to you all for surgery. While we were there she was also diagnosed with apnea. We received the best care and hospitality with you all. She is now thriving and just turned 7. Thank you all for everything you do❤
-Jessica
My 3 day old baby was lifeless in the ER at ETCH. The entire team acted quickly and tested her for everything under the sun and still couldn't figure out what was wrong. The attending did two fast bolises which saved her brain. There was an ER nurse that suggested to check her ammonia as she had seen one other case in her 30 year career. My daughter's ammonia was 682. It was determined that my daughter had a rare disease that resulted in a missing liver enzyme called Urea Cycle Disorder.
I have wanted to locate this nurse to thank her all these years. My baby was admitted on 12/2/2013. Please reach out if you were this nurse!! She was transferred via pedi ambulance to Vanderbilt right after.
-Rachael
I had my first child at 28 weeks and he was sent to the children's NICU. I lost him the same day he was born but if it wasn't for the care of the outstanding nurses and staff I wouldn't have been able to say goodbye to him. Less than a year after the NICU staff took care of my rainbow baby and got her healthy enough to send home to me! Forever grateful to Children's!
-Genna Maggie
I was 19 years old, pregnant with my first baby. Alexander came into this world at 30 weeks, 3lb .9ozs, February 24th 2010. He was in the NICU for 6 weeks and 1 day. Our story began in 1985, we were 17 and 21 ……living on love you could say. March 2,1985 we gave birth to Christopher…..the light of our life was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, Myelomeningocele, Bilateral Club Feet and a host of other problems. My husband and I were overwhelmed and very young but ETCH made things understandable, as we walked trough the procedures one amazing nurse by the name of Pat McMurrary help this young family through the maze of confusion. Our beautiful child was so blessed by ETCH….we as a family was Blessed! Our son had the best until we let the Heavens take him on July 9, 1985. Our favorite nurse was by our side along with Dr. Null until they could do no more.
His sister was born March 3rd, 1986…one year and one day from our beloved Christopher…..the first person we told was our beloved nurse Pat.
Our daughter now 36 is a RN and honoring the medical field.
Thank you ETCH…..you will forever be our ♥.

I was 5 years old in 1976. I got very sick with encephalitis. My family was vacationing in NC. My mom was so scared but she knew she wanted me cared for at ETCH so my parents drove through the night to get me to the hospital. I spent a week on third floor and my parents were so grateful for the care I received. Fast forward 45 years, I’ve been a Social Worker at ETCH for almost 15 years and both my boys have been cared for at Childrens. I am so thankful we have this wonderful hospital in our community and I’m proud to serve alongside the most amazing medical professionals.

I first entered the doors ETCH as the parent of 3wk old daughter whose life was saved by the ED staff in 1990. Over the next 7 days, I did not leave for more than 2 hours. I immediately learned to appreciate the dedicated staff here who went out of their way- from ER registration to PICU staff, a wonderful cardiologist and social work. I was taught infant CPR, met Home Health after discharge and every single encounter had a positive impact. My daughter's last visit here at the ER was within two weeks of her turning 21. When a ER physician advised her she was of appropriate age for adult care, she smiled and told him this was her hospital even if she needed care the night before her 21st birthday. I was already on staff at that time. I chose ETCH when I reentered the job market after years at a family business. I accepted a job as a registrar in the ED that saved my child's life. I've spent the last 15 years evolving with this hospital. Currently I train incoming registration staff while working within the Admitting/PBX department. Always proud to care for our patients, support their families and overall I enjoy the time spent with co-workers. When unpleasant events of the job get me down, I remind myself how blessed I was 30 plus years ago and keep trying to give back.
-Leisa
My daughter was born at 33 weeks with Gastroschisis, and I am very thankful for the advancement in medicine that has allowed the amazing team at Children’s NICU to care for her and her issues! They are amazing!
-Abigayl
In August 1984, I got to have my first trip to ETCH. My adventure took place in the neonatal intensive care area for a couple weeks. My parents weren't able to make the initial trip with me, so the wonderful nurses made them a keepsake book of my stay. They wrote daily journal messages and took pictures. I still have this little book, and it is very special to me. So thank you for helping create this memory!!
-Sheena
A small encounter I had several years ago sums up what ETCH is, and what we must never lose. A mother brought her daughter to the hospital for an EKG. She told me that on their way, she expressed some anxiousness to her daughter about both the EKG and the fact that they had never before been inside ETCH. Her daughter's response to those concerns was "Mom, don't worry. Of course they're going to be nice to us there. It's a children's hospital."
