Protecting Your Child from RSV
Winter is here, and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital wants your child to stay safe during respiratory virus season.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infects the nose, throat and lungs, with symptoms including:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Congestion
- Sneezing
Although it may seem like a common cold, it can become dangerous for infants and young children and may develop into a severe illness such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia.
RSV spreads through coughs, sneezes, direct contact with the virus or touching a surface that has the virus on it.
You can protect your child from RSV during peak season by:
- Making sure they wash their hands often
- Teach them to cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze
- Clean their toys regularly
- Keep your child away from people who are sick or have symptoms
East Tennessee Children’s Hospital recommends calling your child’s pediatrician or visiting a Children’s Hospital urgent care if they are experiencing symptoms.
