East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is excited to announce the opening of its newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) lobby to patients on May 5, 2021. More than 60,000 injured and sick children receive emergency care at Children’s Hospital every year. The hospital’s ED is undergoing a multi-million-dollar, multi-year renovation to better serve children and their families.

The expanded lobby will allow for safely separating sick and injured children in a bright, colorful, and comforting space for all. “This renovation is just the beginning,” explained Dr. Ryan Redman, ED medical director. “The lobby is the front door of our hospital and should be a welcoming place for children and families. We are still putting the finishing touches on all areas of the department and can’t wait until the full transformation is complete.”

Construction began September 2019 and is scheduled to wrap up this Fall. Once complete, ED enhancements will include dedicated trauma rooms, exam rooms with increased privacy for patients and sensory-sensitive rooms. “All areas of the ED and processes are being improved,” said Christy Cooper, Emergency Services nursing director. “This renovation will also increase efficiency and patient flow. Relocating the ambulance bay and creating separate patient intake and exit areas is part of that.”

The total project will cost $14 million, with $10 million raised from community donations. “For decades, Children’s Hospital has been investing in ways to serve the East Tennessee region and beyond,” added President and CEO Matt Schaefer. “The reimagination of the Emergency Department is another example of that and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our generous donors. We can’t thank them enough.” The newly renovated ED will be named Pilot Emergency Care Center for the Pilot Company and Haslam family, who donated $5 million for the project.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital's vision is Leading the Way to Healthy Children. Children's Hospital is a private, independent, not-for-profit pediatric medical center which has served the East Tennessee region for more than 80 years and is certified by the state of Tennessee as a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center.
