Inclusion Resources

Everyone is Welcome at East Tennessee Children's Hospital

Everyone is welcome at East Tennessee Children's Hospital, from patients to parents to visitors, staff and physicians. This page highlights Inclusion Resources for everyone who touches our hospital.

Spiritual Needs

Spiritual NeedsOur chaplains are here to help you no matter what your spiritual needs may be. They are trained to provide spiritual and emotional support regardless of faith tradition during your time of hospitalization. Chaplains make regular visits throughout the hospital and are available upon request. Your own family pastors are always welcome to visit and provide support as well. Our hospital chapel is located on the fifth floor of the North Tower across from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). It is available for family use 24 hours a day.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Wheelchair AccesibilityOur facilities and rooms are all wheelchair accessible. Handicap parking spaces are located in the A, B, and C parking garages as well as parallel parking spaces on 21st street in front of the North Tower. For high top vehicles with a handicap permit, you can park in the D parking area behind Koppel Plaza (entrance from Clinch Avenue).

Sensory Processing Needs

Sensory Processing NeedsChildren’s Hospital has an identification process for patients with Autism and/or Sensory Processing needs. We invite you to let us know how we can best support your family’s sensory needs so we can provide tools and resources to be responsive to them.

Dietary, Religious or Cultural Needs

Dietary, Religious or Cultural NeedsOur goal is to meet your needs, no matter where you are from or what your background is. If you have any dietary needs, religious practices, or cultural customs that we can support, let us know; we will try our best to accommodate your need.

Transgender Identification

Transgender IdentificationChildren’s Hospital has a preferred name field for transgender patients who choose to go by a different name than the name on their birth certificate or driver’s license. We also have a gender identity field so make sure you let us know if your gender differs from your sex assigned at birth. We want to know your pronouns and use them in our care for you so tell us as soon as you like. Your safety is our top priority, and we also want you to be as comfortable as possible. Along with group public restrooms, we have several single unit restrooms available.

American Sign Language (ASL)

American Sign Language (ASL)If you need American Sign Language interpretation (ASL), we have several options to assist you. If you have an appointment, we will be happy to pre-schedule an ASL interpreter through instant remote interpretive services (IRIS) or with an in-person interpreter. If you come in an emergency situation that is not scheduled in advance, we will immediately offer you your preference of something to write with, an UbiDuo device, and/or video interpretation through IRIS. Then, we will get an in-person interpreter, as appropriate. All interpretation services are free of charge to our patients and families.

Language Interpretation

Language InterpretationIf you need interpretation for Spanish, our in-person interpreters would be happy to help you. If an in-person Spanish interpreter is unavailable for more than 15 minutes, we have on-demand instant remote interpretive services (IRIS) or a telephone interpretation system as well. For languages other than Spanish, we have IRIS and/or the phone interpretation system depending on the language. Let us know what language and what method you prefer for your interpretation needs, and we will be happy to help. All interpretation services are free of charge to our patients and families.

Service Animals

Service AnimalsService animals are always welcome to accompany their owners to the hospital. Dogs from Human Animal Bond in Tennessee (H.A.B.I.T.) visit our patients on a regular basis to help bring comfort and fun to our animal-loving kids. In rare, extensive, and pre-approved circumstances, a physician can write an order to bring in a child’s family pet.

Breastfeeding Accommodation

Breastfeeding AccomodationWe have two dedicated rooms around the hospital for breastfeeding/pumping parents. One is in the main lobby of the North Tower, and the other is in the NICU in the South Tower. You are welcome to use them for comfort and/or privacy if you wish.
