Children's Hospital Launches Additional Quality Improvement Effort

At East Tennessee Children's Hospital, we always strive to provide the highest quality care and look for ways to improve the safety and outcomes of our patients. To help identify areas for improvement, we recently joined the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program for Pediatrics.

As part of the program, we will be tracking 30-day patient outcomes to identify complications such as surgical site infections, urinary tract infections and pneumonia. Our results can then be compared to other U.S. hospitals similar to ours in size and type to help determine where we need to make quality improvements.

Participating adult hospitals have been able to prevent 250 to 500 complications and save 12 to 36 lives each year, saving millions of dollars annually.

W. Glaze Vaughan, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., will serve as our Surgeon Champion to oversee the implementation of the program. He will be working with Karen Martin, our Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR), and hospital staff to capture the data.

"This will allow us to utilize our outcomes to drive quality improvement and monitor the impact of our quality improvement initiatives. It means better outcomes and the highest quality care for our patients," Dr. Vaughan said.
