Symptoms of Childhood Heart Disease

Childhood heart disease may be caused by:

  • Congenital heart problems/birth defects
  • Genetic conditions
  • Viruses
  • Rhythm disturbances

Our doctors also determine if a heart murmur is real disease or not. They often are called on to diagnose the cause of fainting and palpitations.

Child Heart Problems

Expert Treatment of Heart Problems in Children

Our specialists also work with many babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who have been born with heart problems. Other Children's Hospital doctors work closely with the heart doctors. Your child may be treated by our pulmonology doctors, respiratory team or the Healthy Ways clinic. All of our staff are experts in treating children of all ages.

Your Appointment with the Pediatric Cardiologist

At your first appointment, your doctor will check your child's vital signs. These signs include respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure and height and weight.

Appointments usually include an electrocardiogram (EKG). EKGs are not painful and do not involve drawing blood or needles. Small sticky electrodes will be placed on your child's skin to pick up the electrical activity of his heart. A cardiac ultrasound, also called an echocardiogram, is often performed. This test is not painful either.

You will receive the results of the EKG and Echo tests on the same day. After those results have been read by the doctor, more tests may be scheduled if needed.

Cardiac Catheterization

Pediatric EKG

At Children's Hospital,we have the only heart doctors in Knoxville who can do cardiac catheterization procedures on children. This procedure is done instead of invasive open heart surgery. Heart defects that can be repaired in the catheterization lab include narrowed valves, narrowed arteries and some holes that can be closed this way.

The nature of this procedure means that your child will spend less time in the hospital and not have to go through major surgery.

If you think your child needs to see a pediatric cardiologist, find a doctor at Children's Hospital. You do not need a referral to make an appointment.
