Car Seat Checkpoints
Car seat checkpoints are offered at several locations in the East Tennessee area. If you live outside any of the areas listed below, check with your local police department for assistance. Make sure to check the Safe Kids calendar for additional checkpoints being offered in the area.
Checkpoint locations:
When you attend a car seat checkpoint, be sure to bring your car seat instructions and car owner's manual. Also, to make the process more efficient, please install your car seat before attending the checkpoint.
Knoxville area checkpoints
The Knoxville Police Department, in conjunction with Safe Kids of the Greater Knox Area, sponsors a car seat checkpoint every month. The checkpoints take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 917 East Fifth Avenue in Knoxville (see below for directions). Checkpoints are free and open to the public, and appointments are not necessary. Directions to the Knoxville Police Department car seat checkpoints:
From I-40
- Take exit #389/Broadway/Hall of Fame Drive onto North Hall of Fame Drive toward Downtown/University of Tennessee (South) 0.4 mil.
- Turn left on East Fifth Avenue at the Fraternal Order of Police Building.
- Go 0.1 mile and turn left immediately after going under the railroad overpass.
- The building is at 917 East Fifth Avenue.
From east Knoxville
- Go west on Magnolia Avenue.
- Turn right onto Jessamine Street and go less than 0.1 mile.
- Turn left on East Fifth Avenue and go 0.1 mile.
- The building is on the right at 917 East Fifth Avenue.
Oak Ridge area checkpoints
The Oak Ridge Fire Department, in conjunction with Safe Kids of the Greater Knox Area, sponsors a car seat checkpoint on the third Saturday of most months. The checkpoints take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oak Ridge Fire Department Station #2, 609 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Checkpoints are free and open to the public, and appointments are not necessary. Sevierville area checkpoints
The Sevierville Police Department is offering car seat checkpoints at three locations in 2010. A car seat technician or police officer will be available to check car seats for recalls, check for proper installation and install car seats if needed. - Checkpoints take place at Mountain National Bank, 470 Collier in Sevierville, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on March 20, July 17, September 18 and November 20.
- Checkpoints take place at Tennessee State Bank, 3307 Winfield Dunn Parkway in Sevierville, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 17, June 19 and August 21.
- Checkpoints take place at David Ownby Insurance, 501 Parkway in Sevierville, on March 31 from 3-6 p.m. and June 23 from 2-6 p.m.
- Walk-ins will be accepted at the Sevierville Police Department, 300 Gary Wade Blvd. in Sevierville, on the second and third Sunday of the month from 2-6 p.m. If anyone has questions, they can call (865) 868-1866.
Harriman area checkpoints
The City of Harriman Police Department and the Harriman City Fire Department, in conjunction with Safe Kids of the Greater Knox Area, sponsor a car seat checkpoint every month. The checkpoints take place on the third Tuesday of each month from 5-8 p.m. at Regions Bank, 200 North Roane Street in Harriman.
