Faculty

GARY M. KIRK, ATTORNEY

Gary Kirk graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in December 1979 and was licensed to practice in March 1980. He has had his own solo practice in Knoxville since April 1981, engaging in several areas of the law in his 27 years of practice. His primary area of practice has involved domestic relations; the first divorce case he handled was in 1980, and he continues to work in this area today with a variety of ongoing cases. Kirk also has handled numerous child custody, support (both child and spousal) and adoption cases, as well as matters related to these issues. Kirk’s background has provided him with personal views of divorce from several perspectives. His parents divorced when he was a young child, and all of his three siblings have gone through divorces and have remarried.

JACKIE KITTRELL, ATTORNEY

Jackie Kittrell has served as the Executive Director of the Community Mediation Center, a non-profit center for mediation in the East Tennessee region. Jackie graduated from the UT College of Law in 1988, having worked with nonprofit organizations throughout her time in law school. She has been involved in work and advocacy around national occupational health and safety policy and also has experience in civil rights litigation, including complex civil litigation and class actions. Her favorite cases are with children who find themselves in the Juvenile Court system. Kittrell has acted as a Guardian ad Litem for children since 1989, as well as having been a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) while in law school. She is a mediator and has received family law and civil mediation training. Recently Kittrell was trained as a collaborative family lawyer and is Vice President of the Tennessee Valley Mediation Association. She has served on the boards of many non-profit organizations and is on the Knox County Juvenile Court’s Foster Care Review Board.

NICOLE SWAIN, PSY.D.

Dr. Nicole Swain is a clinical and pediatric psychologist at Children’s Hospital. She has worked with children and adolescents in various contexts for 11 years, and recently was part of an educational program for families undergoing separation and divorce. Within this program, she worked with other psychologists and psychology students to educate children and parents about the divorce process, the impact on children and what parents can do to help their children during this stressful time. Dr. Swain currently specializes in working in medical settings with children and adolescents who have experienced acute and/ or chronic medical illness or trauma. Her clinical and research interests include helping children and families cope and manage acute and chronic medical illness; assessing cognitive, learning, social, and psychological functioning secondary to trauma and medical illness; and using a cognitive-behavioral approach to help treat chronic pain, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress responses. Dr. Swain is new to Knoxville, having recently relocated from Denver.
