Family Advisory Council nominees sought

Children's Hospital is forming a Family Advisory Council composed of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles of children who have been or who are potential patients of the hospital. We need your help. Click here for letter and application.

Council members will be invited to help the hospital form policies, improve services and make an impact on the work the hospital does every day. The working purpose for the Family Advisory Council is: "To serve as a formal mechanism for involving patients and families in policy and program decision-making at Children's Hospital." Council members will be asked to be involved for at least 6 months and up to two years.

The task force involved in the development of the council is seeking nominations for the council. The task force is looking for family members who will have great ideas, would be willing to speak out honestly and who will help to make the council as inclusive as possible.

The council is a component of the hospital's ongoing child/family centered care philosophy, an approach to pediatric health care that focuses on the family as a child's primary source of strength and support. The philosophy shapes policies, programs, facility design and day-to-day practices.

Throughout the country, families and health care professionals working together have seen these collaborations positively affect health care outcomes. Providers have recognized that as their focus has shifted to include family involvement in health care systems, the quality and cost effectiveness of their programs have increased. And families have discovered greater involvement brings about positive changes that increase satisfaction with their loved one's care.

Family Advisory Council members at Children's Hospital may play a number of roles:

  • Members of task forces
  • Advisory board members
  • Program evaluators
  • Co-trainers for training sessions
  • Mentors for other families
  • Participants in needs assessment processes
  • Reviewers of AV and written materials
  • Advocates
  • Participants in focus groups
  • Members of committees
  • Fundraisers
  • Participants at conferences and working meetings
  • Participants in Quality Improvement initiatives
